AID Kolkata is a volunteers’ movement, aspiring to bring in change that is sustainable and inclusive and in the process learn humility and respect for nature. With focus on grassroots communities, we work towards sustainable, non-discriminatory and inclusive lives for all of us, inspiring in each other trust, confidence and support for one another, While we, along with our partners, do engage in work programmes and activities, we endeavour to go beyond just activities inasmuch that we strive to string together the collective conscience and thought processes of those that we work with and strengthen the inherent links that connect one conscious being to all others.
AID was founded in 1991 with the vision: “Problems are interconnected, so must be the solution.” The problems of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, disease, social inequalities, corruption and the dwindling of natural resources reinforce one another. One problem leads to the other and feeds on another. Therefore the solutions to these problems must be interconnected, just like the problems themselves. Thus solutions must involve initiatives in diverse areas like education, creation of livelihoods, health-care, demanding of accountability, environmental awareness, simple living, water-harvesting, alternate energy and conservation of forests. The interconnected nature of the problems neither starts nor stops with the people who are poor – it affects all of us. Our inability to tackle these problems, take the initiative, trust and work with others and overcome the fear to question authority or change life-styles is very much a part of this web of problems and has to be tackled. AID Kolkata was founded in 2006 with the mission to learn humility, purity and simple-living from those who don’t take too much from the earth. Since then the contours of the group has undergone certain changes in terms of the focus of the actual work, but the spirit and the vision remains same.
